With gas at $ per gallon: GasBuddy.comcan knows the best prices in Town!
Driving 26 miles per day at 50 mpg means using 2.6 gallons per week. The cost is $ per week to ride the Harley.
Driving 26 miles per day at 13 mpg means using 10 gallons per week. That's $ per week to drive the Avalanche
Riding the bus Paying $50 for 22 rides costs $22.73 per week
So... if gas ever gets back down to $2.273 per gallon, the Avalanche becomes affordable as a daily commuter. But, having been spoiled by having someone else chauffer me around in a 12-ton behemoth in the worst Colorado weather, the price of gas will have to get a lot lower to justify driving every day.
There's an even better deal available: a 31 day pass for $62.00. With 20 work days per month, that's 40 rides for $62.00, or $15.50 per week. Gas would have to get down to $1.550 per gallon for the Avalanche to beat the bus.
However, I have yet to commit to taking the bus every day - or even 28 times in a month. That's the number of trips for the monthly pass to beat the 22-ride pass. I may try it after the holidays.
The Harley-Davidson, however, is another issue. Any day that I can ride - I'll ride.
