The kitchen gets a make-over
Out with the old, in with the new.

We started with the cabinets. The faces are white oak, and in decent structural condition, but the finish is tired and too dark.

The sink cabinet doors were very tired.

The island cabinet, sanded and stripped.

The countertop was a problem, too. The old sink was never properly caulked, leading to loss of structural integrity in the countertop material.

The pressboard used in laminated countertop is typically not waterproof - good to know.

The new sink was easy to install and seal - and we water-proofed the new countertop cut edges with Varathane® before we dropped in
the new sink.

The original construction didn't include bracing for the back edge of the countertop resulting in a spongy/flexing countertop when the microwave was placed in the corner.

CC was banished from the kitchen during construction - her favorite spot is in front of the sink where the heater vent blows on your feet.

CC And Sabre were patient and agreed that the floor was looking great!

The new backsplash is genuine stone - slate, quartz, and some granite-like stones..

The new countertop makes a huge difference.

The cabinet frames were finished quickly, the detail work on the drawer fronts is taking extra time.

Bob added a genuine white oak veneer to the sides of the old cabinets, stained it to match, and then a few coats of Varathane®

Next: The floor...

After the first layer of linoleum was torn off we found... the first layer of linoleum was still there.

Along with hundreds and hundreds of annoying staples.

Still making progress on the cabinets...

Doug turned 23 - in a new (nearly done) kitchen.

The Hamburger Cake - a Katein-Taylor Classic.

Dry-laying the tile to determine how the tiles will meet at the two entrances to the kitchen.

The new floor tile cemented down.

The new tile grounted and sealed - looking good!
Next, the island gets a new marble top! Uba Tuba!
